Day 17: Wednesday 19 July 2017

Poor nights sleep – Rain overnight, and crowded tent.

Poor weather at start of day, but improved for a few hours around midday.

Started day with systematic sort out of all kit in both Expedition Vehicles, now that Anja has joined the team in Iceland.

This was a useful exercise, allowing us to reprioritise where and how we stack our equipment.

With a typical tail-gate breakfast as we worked.

We then all went for a swim (and hot pots) in the local swimming pool (Suðurbæjarlaug).

Eat lunch then departed Hafnarfjörður Campsite.

We then drove out of Reykjavik along Road 1, before taking Road 39 (Þrengslavegur) towards Þorlákshöfn, which serves as one of two departure points for ferries to the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago.

The weather then turned for the worse again, with heavy rain.

We then drove Road 34 (Eyrarbakkavegur), where we joined Road 1 at Selfoss.

Continued along Road 1, diving southeast-bound, via Hella to Hvolsvöllur where we camped once again at Hvolsvöllur Campsite.

Tuva & Anja made dinner in the campsite hut, and later we all eat in the tent, listening to the heavy rain on the tent roof.
